Stewart Wellington Lamb

Cedar City

1911  -  2009

Stewart Wellington Lamb, 97, passed away on March 18, 2009. Stewart was born in Toquerville, Utah on November 5, 1911 to William (Bill) Hardy and Evelyn Stewart Lamb. He was the second child of six children: Elva Genevieve Sherratt, Stewart Lamb, Jaunita Zabel, Tony Lamb, who died as a child, Theon Clark and Sherlene Conger. Stewart grew up in Toquerville and other Southern Utah towns until he was sixteen when he went to work at the mines in Good Springs, Nevada. While traveling back and forth to Cedar City, Utah, he met and married his sweetheart, Mary Selinda Bringhurst in Las Vegas, Nevada on New Years Eve 1934. Stewart and his dad owned the old Pages Ranch and operated the ranch for several years before it was sold. Later Stewart's dad purchased the property around Old Iron Town located 26 miles west of Cedar City.

Stewart enjoyed other career opportunities where he and his brother-in laws leased and operated a lead mine near Jean, Nevada. He also worked as a mill right in California and car tender for the Union Pacific Railroad at the Iron Mountain mine. When his dad died in 1949 he took over the ranching and farming operations at Old Iron Town. He worked hard to improve the land, developing two reservoirs for irrigation, and farming several hundred acres of land. He also raised cattle and feeding them out for market. In 1954, Stewart and his wife Selinda deeded 1.5 acres of land to the Sons of Utah Pioneers, encompassing the Old Iron Town milling operations that is now known as Old Iron Town State Park. After operating the ranch for 30 years, Stewart and Selinda subdivided the land and spent the next 20 years traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

In February of 2004, Selinda (wife of 69 years) died leaving Stewart alone in a new house that they purchased one week before Selinda died. Stewart's daughter Dorlene took over the responsibility of taking care of him until he passed away.

Stewart was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother Tony, sister Elva, daughter Carolyn, and a son-in-law Roger Parry. He is survived by his children Dorlene Parry Cedar City, Utah and Bill (Kathy) Lamb of Centerville, Utah. He has 7 grandchildren, 19 great- grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the Southern Utah Mortuary at 11:00 AM. Family and friends may pay their respects on Saturday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Southern Utah Mortuary prior to the funeral services. Interment will be in the St. George Cemetery under the direction of the Southern Utah Mortuary.
